Summer 2023/Western U.P.

Hey everyone! It has been a long time since I’ve written a blog on my photographic adventures, and I do apologize for that. Part of the reason for my silence is mainly being very busy, a combination of prepping inventory for art shows, actual photography itself, and family events interspersed throughout. The other reason is also pure laziness, Insomniac games came out with Spider-man 2 on the PS5 this October, so I was also very distracted.

But I’m back now and playing catch out, so this will be part 1 of a two blog catch up to get you up to speed on where my photography took me this Summer and Fall.

For this blog and the sake of catching up. I will be sharing some of the locations I went to during the summer, but beyond the drive to and from these locations, there were not many “Oh Wow!” moments worth share, just simple day trips or backyard discoveries worth sharing. From there, I also made my annual excursion to the Upper Peninsula in September to close out the season, so I’ll going into a little more detail there, so see further down for more on that week long adventure.

And lastly for the summer(ish) time, one of my art shows this season was on Windmill Island. Granted, the event was technically in October, but this story has a summer vibe to it. From Day 1 of the event into the morning of Day 2, it just poured rain here in Holland, so the morning of the second day I came back to Windmill Island with a very wet tent. As were were drying stuff off for the day of sales, the clouds parted, the sun came out, and gave us all a glorious view of a double rainbow by the iconic DeZwaan windmill. Talk about being in the right place at the right time. While it was technically October, these photos just scream summer to me.

In mid-September, I took my annual trip to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. With my mosaic project in mind, I wanted to get to the some of the farthest western tips of the peninsula to fill in some gaps that I had left on previous trips. Then with where we booked our hotel, we also filled in some gaps in the middle of the peninsula as well around the Pictured Rocks area. And of course I filled in a few spots in the lower peninsula on the drive home as I typically do. With many hours and driving, and also a very close call with a deer along the dark country highways of the Upper Peninsula night, I added a wide variety of work to my portfolio this year. Rather than go through each day in crazy detail, this time around I’ll share some of my favorite shots from each general area or location we visited.

Lake Superior Shores

Delta County/Fayette State Park/Bay De Doc

Seney Wildlife Area

This is one of my favorite places to visit in the U.P., and it’s been a few years since I’ve been here, so it was time to pay it another visit for sure.

Western UP

Keweenaw Peninsula

Marquette Area/Picture Rocks National Lakeshore Area

Drive Home through the Lower Peninsula

And with that, that is Part 1 of my 2 Blog catch up. Part 2 covering my Autumn adventures in 2023 will be coming in the next few days.
