May 2021 Photography
Wohoo! We made it to May! I love the month of May! It’s the wonderful time of year where the world springs back to life after Winter dies down, or in the case of this year when “Second Winter” died down). It’s the season of Tulip Time in Holland, and it’s my birthday month as well :) With all the nice weather this month gave us, needless to say I kept busy with the photography.
Here are the photography highlights for May.
Tulip Time in Holland, MI
After the disappointment of the festival being canceled last year due to COVID, I hit up the town with a newfound determination this year. The weather was a bit gloomy this year, but I hit up the Window on the Waterfront Tulip Gardens on one of the cloudy days to get my close-ups of tulips, then on one of the few sunny days of the week, I went to Windmill Island to get my desired shots of the DeZwaan Windmill rising above the of tulips.
Critters on the Ground, in the Water, and in the Skies
Another point of focus this month was the critters than made themselves at home in the backyard. I had some fun sneaking up on and shooting some rabbits and a woodchuck in the backyard. Then I visited one of my favorite parks in Spring Lake to photograph some Swallows and ducks in the pond. I also spotted a new addition for my portfolio at the Ottawa Sands County Park, a Sandpiper.
Zeeland Eagle Family
A friend of mine told me about an eagle nest in the Zeeland area and suggested I check it out. Being so close to home, I was surprised I didn’t hear about it sooner. The nest had two adult eagles and two juvenile eagles that probably are ready to take flight in the next few weeks I’d imagine. It was fun not only to watch and photograph those awesome birds, but also chatting with the multitudes of people that came and went while I was there that apparently knew about the eagles for way longer than I did. I’ll definitely be visiting them again.
Future Plans
Every year I always go on an extended photo trip for a few days to the U.P. or some new place I haven’t photographed before. I haven’t jumped into planning it as early as I usually do due to COVID and work situations, but I finally took the time make a decision, pick some dates, and get the time off from work to go on the trip. This year—in August—I’ll be way west in the U.P. again to photograph along the Michigan/Wisconsin border, hitting some of the key locations in those Michigan counties that I want to hit for my special photography project I’m working on. Then I’ll be going even further into Wisconsin itself to see and photograph the Apostle Islands! That’ll get another of the 50 states off my to-do list. Chances are I’ll hit up Wisconsin again sometime in the future to get more of a range of the state, but for now, the Islands will be a good starting point.
