June 2021 Photography

Here we are, finished with June and half-way through the year.  Admittedly, I didn’t do a lot with photography this month.  My weekends where filled up with family events that kept me from going out, and then lots and lots of rain kept me indoors on the other weekends.  I did get in a little bit though.  I published some images from a photo trip I took at the tail end of May and finished editing in June, and then I got a few miscellaneous shots of backyard critters and the skies with the recent weather we’ve had, including the solar eclipse we had this month (small as it may be viewing it from my backyard).

Here are the photography highlights of June!

Day Trip to Midland

For a personal photography project I’ve been working on, I took a day trip to Midland County at the tail-end of May with my Aunt.  This is the first longer photo trip I’ve taken with the new Escape, and it went very smoothly.  Needless to say, there will be many more photography adventures to new places in the new car.  I made a full day of this trip, hitting up multiple locations while on the other side of the state.

The main attraction of our Midland trip was a visit to Dow Gardens.  I didn’t know ahead of time that reservations were needed to get in, but we got lucky and they still let us in.  We walked through the different areas of the garden, staying out of the way of a wedding party having their ceremony and photos taken at the same time we were there, and checked out the canopy walk in the Gardens where you can be elevated off the forest floor and get up into the trees.  It was certainly a cool place to be.

After finishing up at the gardens, the next stop was at the Chippewa Nature Center, where we took a short walk along the Pine River, seeing the point where it merges with the Chippewa River.

Then our last stop before returning home was to Sanford Lake.  When I was first doing research for my project a few months ago, I was seeing pictures online of a gorgeous lake that I figured would be a good spot to check out.  It wasn’t until we actually got there that we realized that this was the lake that emptied out and flooded Midland one year ago when the dam burst.  What was once a vast blue reflection of the sky above is now a valley of green weeds.  Not the sight I was expecting when I got there, but certainly interesting to see nonetheless.

Miscellaneous Neighborhood Shots

The heavy rains kept me indoors for a few weekends this month, but luckily as a photographer, you never have to go far to find good subject matter for your images. These shots were all taken either in the backyard, or a short drive around the corner from my home to get views of the sky unobstructed by trees. The storms that hit in the later half of the month mostly provided me with flat grey skies, but there was the occasional opportunity to get some awe-inspiring shots before the storms hit, or with the last storm of the month, after it passed. I had the opportunity to created a 7-shot panoramic photograph of a double rainbow. For me this was a lucky opportunity as typically when I see rainbows, they are either very faint, or they happen when I’m not looking. This was a perfect rainbow to my eyes, and it was a great way to close the month of June.
